Cyclists’ Impressions of Camp Hazen
“What a great place." - "Such a feeling of community.”
“The food here is awesome.”
“So inspiring when we hear from the people who live day to day with MS.”
The above are statements heard from the cyclists participating in rides years ago when we overnighted at Sunrise Resort in Moodus.
It was like being a kid again on summer vacation – with the horseshoes, hoops, swimming and eating together. We've cycled in most of the bike MS rides and guess what nostalgia fans? This year's overnight is at Camp Hazen in Chester will have very much the same feel. It’s a beautiful facility on a beautiful lake with all sorts of team-play opportunity! I hear the food is excellent and they have a huge meeting/eating area overlooking the lake! We're looking forward to that great sense of community you only find when people work and play together toward a common goal.

I am an active in the bike MS, Cardio Express Ride, presented by Mohegan Sun, planning committee. This will be my third year as a cyclist in the event. I recently toured this year's new overnight venue at YMCA Camp Hazen in Chester, Conn. The past two years’ overnight venue in Ivoryton was less than satisfactory, resulting in many committed participants questioning their continued support for the event. After visiting Camp Hazen, I can assure you there is no further need of concern. The property is surrounded by a beautiful lake, open fields, groomed pathways through the woods and cabins well-placed around the perimeter. The proximity of the cabins to other activity areas and buildings will build camaraderie among teams and enhance the overnight experience. The cabins are incredibly well-maintained and very clean. Each cabin has its own interior bathroom amenities, limiting the need to walk through the woods to use lavatory facilities. It is evident that there is great pride of ownership by the staff of Camp Hazen and their efforts will not go unnoticed. The main hall and dining facility look like a large cabin retreat, not a cafeteria feel as we experienced last year. After seeing what we have to look forward to for the 2008 ride, I am proud to say that you are in for a treat! The chapter did a fantastic job in listening to the concerns previously voiced and has delivered a great solution! If you are questioning your participation this year, question no more! Mark your calendars and start gearing up for the ride’s best year yet!
