Long-Term Care

When living with MS, there are varying degrees of support needed. Some people may live independently and require assistance only with certain activities of daily living, such as bathing. Others enjoy the socialization of attending an adult day program. Long-term care services can keep people moving along a continuum, whether it is minimal or complete care. Services are available either in the home or within the community.

The Long Island Chapter provides the following:

  • Information and referral regarding long-term services available in your community.
  • Limited counseling and consultation on care decision-making.
  • Information on resources available to finance long-term services.
  • Lists of care facilities on Long Island, such as adult day care, respite care, home care services, nursing facilities and companion care.

To get more information about long-term care, please contact Jane Reilly 516.740.7227 or 631.864.8337 ext. 218 or via email at jreilly@nmssli.org.

Long Term Care Insurance for people with Multiple Sclerosis

Long term care insurance may help pay for care in your own home, in an Assisted Living Facility or a nursing home. At this writing, we are aware of only one commercial insurer, Penn Treaty Network America who is able to sell these policies to eligible people with MS. The policies and their availability vary depending on your state of residence, is generally limited to those able to perform all of their activities of daily living (such as walking, bathing, or eating), completely independently, and do not utilize assistant devices such as walkers, a wheelchair or scooter.
