Support Groups

Spring 2010
10 - WEEK SEMESTER
Starting week of April 19

The New York City - Southern New York Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society offers support groups for individuals living with MS, their families and caregivers. These groups are created to meet the needs of people with similar concerns.

  • In-Person Groups are an hour and a half long. They meet in various locations throughout the five boroughs.
     
  • Conference Call Groups are an hour long, are free of charge and require no special equipment. The calls come to your home and are available to members within the 212, 347, 646,718, 845, 914 or 917 area codes.

All groups provide opportunities to discuss MS related concerns, experiences and resources. Groups are conducted by chapter-trained therapists. To participate in a group, you must be registered as a member of the chapter. Membership is free.

TO REGISTER
Call the Information Resource Center at 1-800-344-4867, and choose option 1. A trained staff person will register you.

You may register for up to two conference call groups. There is no limit for in-person groups.

After You Register
Before the start of your group, the therapist leading your group will call you with specific details, including the start date.

  • Groups begin the week of April 19 and run for 10 weeks, unless otherwise noted.
  • There will be some breaks for holidays.
  • Your group leader will clarify the schedule for your specific group.
GROUPS FOR INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH MS

Black Voices in Connection:
For black people of all cultural backgrounds living with MS.
Available as In-person and Conference Call  

Homebound:
Individuals living with MS who
are homebound.
Available as Conference Call 

Cognitive Concerns:
Strategies to assist with cognitive concerns such as memory and concentration.
Available as Conference Call

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or
Trans-gendered:
living with MS.
Available as In-person                                        

Creative Artists with MS: a forum for Individuals to discuss the inter-relationship between art,music and/or writing and living with MS.
Available as Conference Call 
 

Living with MS:
Individuals with more visible
MS symptoms.
Available as In-person and Conference Call

Diagnosed with Progressive MS: Individuals
diagnosed with primary or secondary progressive MS.
Available as Conference Call 
Men's Concerns: Men living with MS.
Available as Conference Call
Newly Diagnosed: Two session groups (offered repeatedly throughout the semester) for individuals diagnosed within the past two years. The opportunity for referral to ongoing newly diagnosed group follows.
Available as In-person and Conference Call 

Newly Diagnosed Primary Progressive
MS:
Monthly conference call group for individuals diagnosed with primary progressive MS within the past five years.
Available as Conference Call

Nursing Home Residents: Individuals
living with MS in a nursing home.
Available as Conference Call
But You Look So Well: Individuals living with MS whose symptoms are not easily observed by others.
Available as In-person

Moving Forward with MS: For people relatively newly diagnosed with MS negotiating the changes MS can bring.
Prerequisite: one semester of the Newly Diagnosed group or similar group.
Available as In-person 

Opting for No Treatment Now:
Two session group for people who have chosen not to take any of the MS disease modifying medications.
Available as In-person 

Orthodox Jewish Women: Living with MS.
Available as Conference Call

Professional Men Living with MS:
Monthly group for professional working men.
Available as In-person 
Twenties and Thirties Networking Group:
Monthly group for individuals 19 -39 years
old living with MS.
Available as In-person
Stress Management: Practical strategies to
reduce stress.
Available as Conference Call
Grupo de Apoyo y Educación en
Español Para Personas Viviendo con EM:

Este grupo se ofrece a nuestros miembros que hablan español para recibir apoyo y aprender a vivir con la esclerosis múltiple. Si usted necesitaasistencia en registrarse para estos grupos, por favor llame a Moyra Rondon, directora de Programas Hispanos al 212-453-3299.

Women 40+: Women living with MS between the ages of 40 an d 59.

Parenting: Parents living with MS who have children 18 years old and younger.

GROUPS FOR FAMILY, CAREGIVERS OR PARTNERS

Adult Children:
monthly group for adult children who have a parent diagnosed with MS.
Available as In-Person      
La Familia Hispana Viviendo con EM:
Aprendiendo, Riendo y Compartiendo – este grupo de apoyo mensual  conducido en español, explora maneras de aumentar conocimiento, confianza, y habilidad de abogar por si mismo y por su familia. El grupo es abierto as las personas de habla español que viven con EM y cualquier miembro de su familia que tenga interes en participar. Family/Caregivers:
parents, adult children, siblings and other family members and/or caregivers of persons living with MS.

Spouses/Partners Living with MS:

GROUPS FOR CHILDREN
Children: between the ages of nine and fourteen who have a parent living with MS.
Available as Conference Call
