2011 Advocacy Hall of Fame

 

Kim Campbell - South Central Region
Kim Campbell is an MS activist from Kyle, Texas. Kim was diagnosed with MS nearly three decades ago, but she has never let her diagnosis stop her from taking action. Kim reaches out to her local, state, and federal legislators to advocate for disability rights, support for family caregivers, and access to services. Together with her husband Gary and sister Linda, she is dedicated to improving the lives of people with MS through advocacy.

Karen Knable Jackson - National Capital Chapter
Karen Jackson has been advocating for MS and disability rights for seven years. She lobbies for reasonable accommodations in the workplace and employment rights locally and nationally. As a member of the Maryland Government Relations Committee and fivetime Public Policy Conference attendee, Karen is a leader and mentor among her peers. An effective activist, Karen uses her story to personalize the experience of living with MS, then universalizes her situation so others can connect to it — demonstrating what it means to be an effective advocate.

Ken Jones - Greater New England Chapter
Ken Jones is a true MS activist. His skilled leadership helped establish the New Hampshire Government Relations Committee, and has guided its work to repeated success on important issues, including accessible parking laws and state aid for people with MS in financial need. Ken leverages his political affiliations to advocate at the state level and at the annual Public Policy Conference. A chapter trustee and long-time Bike MS rider and fundraiser, Ken is also an accessible skiing instructor. Ken Jones has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National MS Society, Greater New England Chapter since 2000. He has chaired the New Hampshire Government Relations Committee since its inception and attends the annual Public Policy Conference to advocate on key issues affecting people with MS. Ken is also a long time instructor in the “Ability Plus” program for disabled skiers at Waterville Valley.

Joel I. Kahn - Ohio Valley Chapter
Joel was involved with the National MS Society for 31 years, serving as a volunteer, board member, activist and trusted advisor to the Chapter prior to his death on March 8, 2011. Joel was a key member of the Ohio Valley chapter’s Government Relations Committee and in 1991 he was named National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Father of the Year. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Joel to the National Council on Disability.

Sarah Mayfield - Eastern North Carolina Chapter
Sarah Mayfield is a dynamic volunteer leader whose advocacy on behalf of the Society’s priorities at the local, state and federal level has had a measurable impact on the lives of thousands of people living with MS. She is a model Grasstops Activist, making key connections with high ranking elected officials, engaging others living with MS to become activists and influencing legislation.

Dr. Ed Nightingale - Upper Midwest Chapter
Dr. Ed Nightingale is the retired Director of Psychology for the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center and has been a leader in the movement to end MS for more than six years. He’s on the Upper Midwest Chapter Board of Trustees and serves both the chapter’s clinical advisory and government relations committees. Dr. Nightingale was also recently selected to be part of the State Activism Council, a national workgroup created to provide direction to local advocacy campaigns.

Rachel Stacom - New York City – Southern New York Chapter
Rachel Stacom joined the Government Relations Committee (GRC) in 2007 and has served as our expert on long term care issues. She has helped guide the GRC and NY MSCAN (New York MS Coalition Action Network) on long term care issues. Rachel has attended the federal and state Public Policy Conferences. In 2010, Rachel was selected to serve on the Federal Activism Council.

Pam Trosino - Greater Delaware Valley Chapter
Pam has been living with MS for several years. She is a visionary and is willing to take on new projects and challenges. Dedicated to affecting large scale change for people with MS, Pam is a leader. She is a member of the chapter’s Golden Circle Committee, Government Relations Committee and is the chapter’s first County Captain for Advocacy. Pam is a bold and passionate voice for people living with MS.
