Lyn Laielli and Lyn's Leggs: They ride for MS
When Lyn Laielli of Seattle was diagnosed in 1986, she instantly—“within a nanosecond!”—transformed her life. She researched the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for living with MS, improved her diet and started a daily workout routine. “I’m committed to swimming and weight lifting. I don’t know any other way to live.”
She also is the inspiration for Lyn’s Leggs, a Bike MS team that has raised about $175,000 since 2005. “We have about 40 riders, plus fabulous volunteers who decorate and prepare food. We have a great ride—through the scenic Skagit Valley, over the glorious Deception Pass Bridge and around Whidbey Island, all in Washington State. I rode three years ago and am committed to riding again this year.”
Fatigue can be a challenge for Lyn, however. “I can have a day with so much energy I don’t know what to do next. Yesterday I went swimming, had two appointments, then my husband and I met for a movie. Today is a recuperation day, with the hope that I can hit the ground running tomorrow.”
Lyn’s husband, David, is the team captain and they both focus on getting people motivated. “Potential first-timers may be a bit nervous and feel they need to complete the entire route. We let them know they can ride however long they are comfortable with.”
Washington's Bike MS event is “a great big party from Friday night until Sunday afternoon,” Lyn said. “We get a bit silly by placing Barbie doll or baby doll legs in our helmets. They inevitably get lost throughout the weekend, and other riders get a kick out of scooping them up as ‘souvenirs.’
“I’ve been living a full rewarding life with MS for 25 years, and always look forward to what’s around the next bend.”
